Rico Camps, Daniel
Biography
Daniel Rico Camps is Associate Professor of Art History at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, where he has been teaching since 1992. At this university, he has served as Deputy Coordinator of the Humanities degree (2001–2009), Coordinator of the Humanities PhD program (2000–2013) and of the Art History degree (2021–2023), as well as Director of the Institute for Medieval Studies (2018–2021). He currently heads the Department of Art and Musicology (since 2023).
As a researcher, he has taken part in a dozen research projects, including CARE Hispania (Hispanic section of the Corpus Architecturae Religiosae Europeae), directed by G. Ripoll (University of Barcelona); Literatura, Art i Representació a la llarga Edat Mitjana (LAiREM), directed by F. Massip (Rovira i Virgili University); and the Corpus de inscripciones y textos hispano-latinos sobre arquitectura religiosa y civil altomedieval (CITHARA), directed by I. Velázquez (Complutense University of Madrid).
His research is highly diverse, cross-disciplinary, and creative. In the field of medieval studies, he focuses both on epigraphy—especially from the Carolingian period—and on art and architecture from Late Antiquity to the era of the Catholic Monarchs, devoting much of his attention to the dialectical relationship between text and image, sacred and profane, and art and liturgy. Within these areas of study, notable works include a bilingual edition of the Carolingian poem Hortulus by Walafrid Strabo (2024), and the books Las voces del románico. Arte y epigrafía en San Quirce de Burgos (2008) and El románico de San Vicente de Ávila (estructuras, imágenes, funciones) (2002), as well as the co-editing of collective volumes such as Catedral y ciudad medieval en la península Ibérica (2004, with E. Carrero), El «Libro de buen amor». Texto y contextos (2008, with G. Serés and O. Sanz), and José Enrique Ruiz-Domènec o la narración de la historia (2021, with A. Blasco).
He is also interested in various aspects of the history and concept of cultural heritage. In this field, he has published the Spanish edition of A. C. Quatremère de Quincy’s Cartas a Miranda (2008) and the essay ¿Quién teme a Francisco Franco? Memoria, patrimonio, democracia (2024), which received wide coverage in national media.
He has served as editor of the academic journals Medievalia (2012–2018) and Locus Amoenus (2019–2023), and since 2017 he has coordinated the essay series El espejo y la lámpara (Publications Service of the UAB). He is also a member of the editorial boards of Dante e l'Arte, Journal of Medieval Iberian Studies, Letteratura & Arte, Pyrenae, and Quintana. He belongs to the International Council of Museums, the Association of Museum Professionals of Catalonia (AMC), and Hispania Nostra.
