II International Congress Mediterranean Encounters, 13th-15th of September, 2023. Painted space, reconstructed space in medieval mural painting (IV-XIII Centuries)

The Museu Nacional is hosting the second edition of the Incontri Mediterranei (Mediterranean Encounters), whose first edition was held in Rome in 2019. It is an ambitious international symposium on medieval art that was born from the close collaboration between the Museu Nacional d’ Art de Catalunya, the Sapienza Università di Roma and the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, with the aim of promoting the study and characterization of the artistic phenomena of the medieval Mediterranean, the circulation of repertoires and artists, as well as the rich exchange processes that distinguish them. In this meeting, the problem of how the thematic distribution and the perception of space worked in a painted church will be discussed, from its origins in the 13th century, and what strategies have been developed by museums and original places to help the viewer to reconstruct this experience. Speakers from the universities of Cleveland, Athens, Nicosia, Rome, Milan, Verona, Catania, the Complutense University of Madrid and the Autonomous University of Barcelona participate in the congress.

The objective of this conference will be to analyze how the distribution of images was in a painted church and the original perception of space in these ensembles from its origins to the 13th century. We want to focus on the theme of the removal of medieval wall paintings (or parietal mosaics) and the strategies that have been carried out in museums and original places to help the viewer to recreate the original experience of these sets. The congress will address the cycles of medieval mural painting and parietal mosaic throughout the Mediterranean from the 4th to the 13th centuries (Holy Land, Egypt, Cyprus, Greece, Italy, France and the Iberian Peninsula).
